I've gotten a run of them -- for months now. Each talks about a Norton subscription. Each comes from a bogus address. Each has some non-English gibberish text somewhere obvious/important: The subject or early in the message.
Not only does Gmail not categorize as spam, it puts it into Primary. I think that means it actively identifies it as a receipt?
And the same phish appears to swim over a reasonably wide range. I saw a Nextdoor post where someone random near me got hit with exactly the same thing. And of course we're just the communicative tip of the iceberg.
If, just a short 30 years into widespread email use (๐) we can't keep our mail streams clear, can you imagine what happens in avatar-enabled augmented reality?
That is, AR's going to have a heck of a spam problem. Can't wait to see how it manifests.
Look, email should be simpler. I'm glad my extended family in general has moved on from the smilie-icon , theme-infested stomping grounds of Incredimail and friends, and I was really excited when the (now dead) Letters project wanted to support (only?) plain text composition, but, at the same time... is it wrong to want to highlight some text?
Part of Gmail's latest interface overhaul was to tweak composition into that crazy little box that pops up in the bottom right of your browser window. If I want to highlight text that I'm writing inside of that little iframe-ish thing, I select it, click that crazy tiny A icon, keep my mouse on that wacky row of choices, FIND ANOTHER A icon (this time not in italics), click that, then mouse over to the left to choose my color from that groovy pallet.
RLY [gender-inclusive though admittedly still slightly normalizing] guys? Maybe the tiny frame means shorter emails and the buried rich text options pushes down the number of highlighted passages, and somehow that much less markup helps Google trim bits on the pipe, but rly?
I'm kinda tired of showing you what these say, so I'm just pasting the source. I think my email addy is the only thing personal about it, right? GREYLIST, DANGIT. I feel like applying for a job with Gmail just to drop in, set up greylisting, and getting out (if I need to). Seriously, guys, please?
Awl, heck, here's the contents:
Dear Valued Member,

Guess it's compromised by some sort of trojan. I'm not looking.
Now the source.
Honestly, this sounds like it'd solve the majority of the Gmail Fail stuff I've been seeing, and with Google's ability to collect store the "triplets", they should be able to make this all pretty transparently from its users' perspectives.
The Greylisting method is very simple. It only looks at three pieces of information (which we will refer to as a "triplet" from now on) about any particular mail delivery attempt:
1. The IP address of the host attempting the delivery 2. The envelope sender address 3. The envelope recipient address
From this, we now have a unique triplet for identifying a mail "relationship". With this data, we simply follow a basic rule, which is:
If we have never seen this triplet before, then refuse this delivery and any others that may come within a certain period of time with a temporary failure.

I did some line wrapping, but that's about it. Perhaps Google should partner with IBM for a twenty year-old version of Watson (or attach Gmail to an iPhone and rewire Siri) to figure out that emails claiming to be from Gmail that they didn't send should probably be reviewed before they're released to the inboxes. Seriously, would holding suspicious emails for a few hours hurt anyone unduly?
I mean seriously -- Account User confirm "Google mail" -- with a sig that includes "Google" and "Team" should be enough for someone to figure out something phishy is going on. How about ANY From line with "gmail" in the pre-ampersand portion? This isn't even close to rocket science.
EDIT: I thought there was another recently. Two days ago.

RLY? Have I started reporting not only as spam but as phishing scams? Yes. But if you're expecting human users to do the work of catching this stuff, you don't really understand 01s.

Even worse, this suggests that some people might have experienced vandals coming their way via email. Quelle horror!
If your spam filter can't catch these, you're doing it wrong, okay? I've posted about this before, and it's about the fifth or sixth time I've had one get through. How does this happen? Add a hard-coded rule, for heaven's sake.
