Safari has responsive testing as part of its dev tools. I've used a similar trick of Chrome's, and it works well.

The only weird thing for me is that I've got macOS 12.2 on my MacBook, but Safari only has iPhone sizes through the iPhone 8.

No iPhone X, no XR, no 11, no 12, no 13.

That's weird, right?

Yes. But it is also very Apple-y. They had a feature, they built it, they have not prioritized updating it, so it, well, not precisely withers, but sits on the vine, waiting for its next day in the sun.

Weird.

That's it. That's today's post.

Getting ready to listen in on the Apple keynote in a few hours, and was a little surprised to see what's at the end of this:

Requirements: Live streaming uses Appleโ€™s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. HLS requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Safari on iOS 7.0 or later, a Mac with Safari 6.0.5 or later on OS X v10.8.5 or later, or a PC with Microsoft Edge on Windows 10

I remember once having an iPod touch up at work to watch one, as I couldn't watch on a Windows box at all.

If you were wondering if Safari on Windows was dead, well, first, you shouldn't've been. It is. But here's your second or third confirmation.

Second, still seems strange this doesn't happen in iTunes or QuickTime only. They're not just okaying watching on Windows, but suggesting you do it on Microsoft's new browser.

Guessing there's some talk between the two behind the scenes on this one.

PS -- I know this one. It's Sia. Crazy album cover though.

On Windows at least, Safari will apparently check some system-wide setting and see if there's a proxy it should be using. This would be taken from some wacky .pac file or some such.

So when Safari pops open a window saying... "To view this page you must log in to the http proxy server", you're probably (?) supposed to be blocked from viewing that site by your [office?] proxy. I've noticed that I can type in real mature stuff like "doo doo" for the user name and password and still through, however, so I'm not sure what's going on there.

To fix this (at least for me), you can go to settings in Safari, click Advanced, click the Change Settings button next to Proxies, click the LAN settings button on the new dialog, then if "Use automatic configuration script" is checked, uncheck it.

Profit.

That was a pain. I wanted to use Safari as my "no Javascript" test browser, and it was initially just hanging, and then it did this proxy jive after reinstall. Fun times.

What's "Incognito Mode"? From Incognito Window (aka P0rn Mode):

Think of incognito as a 'privacy mode' to prevent tracking from those local and also by websites sharing data about you. Since the advent of browsing the web in the 90's, parents have been slapping their kids around for their surfing habits.๏ฟฝ Spouses have been busting each other and using computer data in court cases for custody battle.๏ฟฝ Incognito mode throws a wrench into the whole spy game by hiding your tracks.

This is probably the most revolutionary feature to be built into current browsers since pop-up blockers.๏ฟฝ We say current browsers because๏ฟฝ Microsoft has been testing a similar feature in Internet Explorer v8 (Beta 2) called 'In Private' mode which also does not save browsing, search history, cookies, form data or passwords with automatic clearing of browser cache.

Might be worth pointing out that Safari has had just such a feature ("Private browsing" or some such) for a while, now, as well as the "Reset Safari" menu item, which, if it actually does what it says, should render anything you do in cognito [sic] mode moot too. I've kinda wondered if that was a smart idea from Apple. What happens if you surf in private mode, reset the browser, and your spouse or parent still bustifies you? Isn't Apple left holding the bag, or at least responsible for your holding it? Seems like unnecessary liability for browser makers.

Cute icon, anyhow, though it ain't no dancing moon.
